Reasons to Believe - discussion evening
Why does Professor Richard Dawkins want to make you an atheist? Because he believes science should answer every question... and that life is ultimately without purpose. A cosmic accident. It's a bleak and hopeless philosophy- but not one shared by all scientists!
Can good science and Christian faith respect each other? Yes! For example, Alister McGrath (author & theologian) and Francis Collins (Human Genome Project) who combine considerable scientific reputations with a clear Christian faith.
Do we have good reasons for believing, or is Christianity just about blind faith? It's an important question. We looked at some of the arguments, ideas, and evidence.
Our conclusion: if, like Richard Dawkins, you decide that God is too improbable to exist and that there is no acceptable evidence for God- then you logically exclude religious faith from life. But does Dawkin's logic hold true? We thought not. His aggressive atheism seems unconvincing.
But on the other hand, if you examine all the evidence and are willing to admit the possibility that God might exist, then the suggestion that God might also disclose information makes it quite reasonable to hold a faith. Christians have always believed that the Bible is a record of God's self-revelation. And to put it bluntly- if Jesus Christ truly came back to life on Easter Sunday, then HE must be considered the most remarkable proof!
An Evening with Adrian Plass
in the Dolphin Hotel, Bovey Tracey.
Buffet supper followed by our guest speaker. We had a great time as Adrian reflected on life, the Church, and how God can hold all these things together.
An evening of insight and humour- Adrian is the author of the "Sacred Diary" series and many other books, Some are very funny, others very serious. He speaks regularly at Spring Harvest, and has worked on TV as well as local radio.
